"PAINTINGS"
"SCULPTURE"
"DRAWINGS"
In these nearly life-size constructions
of cedar wood, burlap, brass, leather, wax, cast iron and bronze,
Gaudel continues his exploration of realism bordering on surrealism
that is reminiscent of his paintings. Comprised of various characters
from history and mythology, Gaudel refers to his figures as being
"modular sculpture" with "multiple personalities".
Arranged in various positions and grouped in different ways,
these hinged and jointed creations function as a cast of characters
whose roles and relationships are constantly changing. One day,
"Venus" may be kneeling before a rearing horse and
his helmeted rider; the next, "Eve" may be feeding
the same horse an apple, and "Venus" may be reclining
on a couch, her eyes fixed on "Leda and the Swan".
Jean-Jacques Gaudel is a native of France, with a degree in
Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lyon. He moved
to the U.S. in 1974, pursuing various interests in interior design
and photography. Gaudel has exhibited extensively throughout
the U.S., has won numerous major awards, and his work is represented
in multiple corporate and private collections. He presently resides
in Birmingham, Alabama. |
