Artist's Statement
I like to travel. My favorite part is the actual traveling, going and coming back. When looking out the windows and not actually being out in it, my best ideas come to me. I think of myself as a voyeur. I watch and imagine. I work primarily for my own amusement and pleasure. I am my biggest fan. I play with characters like others might play with dolls, constantly enhancing the tales I tell about them or they tell me. My work shows the influences of teaching Art History in Catholic schools as well as my travels to Mexico, Spain and Italy. The "trappings" of religious art such as, crucifixes, ex-votos, altarpieces, icons and holy water fonts, intrigue me. Stripped of their religious content, I take these forms and use them as the foundation for my works. Much of my imagery is inspired by "fugitive wanted" ads and nicknames often found in the obituaries. I like to include irony, absurdity, and humor in my work. I primarily work in gouache; actually I abuse it. I began working on paper then moved on to clay, papier-mache' and tin. I find I can use it everywhere. I enjoy the way figures distort when painted on rounded surfaces. I love to hold the vessel and turn them around and around. I am very much a product of my environment. I married a man who is convinced he was Scarlet O'Hara in a previous life. We freely give each other ideas. He threw the clay pieces and I added the faces. We work together best when we are not working together. We work much better on a relay system. We both suffer from the same delusion in that we think the other person is a genius. John once tried to tell someone that we are one person, that we share one brain, but he got nervous and said we share half a brain."
